I am the loneliest monk

I can’t tell you how sad I am to learn that the following story is untrue. I hate the internet for debunking all the cool stories I thought were true. Then again the FBI told a lot of untrue stories about the Black Panthers and Jean Seberg and that didn’t turn out so well. The other story I wish were true is the one about Rickey Henderson and John Olerud (google it). Life would suck without plainly untrue comical anecdotes.

MS. SOREN knows that a lot of her more experienced colleagues who work for more established news organizations do not take her terribly seriously. It is this condescending attitude that she blamed for what she said was an entirely erroneous quote attributed to her by Liz Smith, the gossip columnist.

Shortly after the inauguration, Ms. Smith wrote that Ms. Soren was confused by Mr. Clinton’s naming Thelonious Monk as one of his favorite jazz musicians. Ms. Smith wrote that Ms. Soren publicly lamented, “So far we have not been able to find the person he wants to play with — the Loneliest Monk.”

Ms. Soren said she had never said any such thing. “Because of my association with MTV and because I’m a young woman, people are always waiting for some ditzy comment,” she added. “They didn’t get it through the whole campaign, so they made one up.”

(The day after the original item ran, Ms. Smith acknowledged that it had been based on a rumor.)

American Time Capsule

I’ve been reading Dangerously Funny a book about the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour and its censorship battles. Most of the things they did on that show seem pretty dated though, but this video American Time Capsule which aims to tell American History in five minutes is still pretty intense. You get a real subliminal message of the dangerous violent years that had made up our country’s time on the world stage. This was right after the assassinations of MLK and RLK so there was a good reason to feel somewhat paranoid about the times.

It’s very trippy but a little depressive.

Regrets I’ve had a few

People always try to tell me that things happen for a reason and that I should look forward to better times, but I’ve always had a tendency to ruminate on the failures of the past often to an incredibly depressive degree and the older you get the less likely you see the future as evening out all of the slights of the past.

Lawyer screw up of the year

“Talks between O’Brien and NBC are ongoing, with the two sides debating whether the network is voiding his contract by moving the show. Unfortunately for O’Brien, during negotiations for his original deal to host “The Tonight Show” his management apparently forgot to get it in writing that the show’s time slot would always start at  11:35 p.m.”

Oops, sorry Conan – I guess we should have thought of that. You know – er – uh – seeing that that was the whole point of the deal.
