People are Goofy Enough Already – My Hilarious Online Battle with a Music Snob Who Doesn’t Understand His Own Small Government Beliefs

I honestly wasn’t trying to get into an argument and certainly didn’t realize that it was possible to find someone that hated Paul McCartney – Who hates Paul McCartney?

Louis J: Frankly, I oppose being around anyone who uses it (marijuana)….even if they are well spoken and seem intelligent. I find it repulsive.

Louis J: Reality isn’t always fun but I NEVER want to alter my consciousness. To me that is running away from reality. Not a good idea!!!

Brad Laidman: Paul McCartney quit because he was embarrassed for his kids – but he smoked it his whole life and did no harm and a lot of good – yeah he almost wound up in a Japanese prison for life which might have caused a war between England and Japan, but other than that – scott-free

Brad Laidman: A lot of good music made on it – if you have the same opinion of alcohol then we are fine

Louis J: I played music professionally during my college days and one of the reasons I decided against it for a profession was that so many were high. Yes, of course, I am against alcohol. Altering one’s consciousness is damaging and to me is running away from reality.

Brad Laidman: it should just be legalized it’s infinitely less harmful than alcohol and cigarettes

Louis J: I disagree and I admit I want strictness. We Americans are spoiled enough and it shows in our society. We can use more strictness and discipline for sure.

Brad Laidman: Louis J tell me one downside it had for Paul McCartney other than his arrest in Japan – Heroin kills musicians just look at before and after pictures of Chet Baker – doing that would convince kids that heroin is horrible instantly – the real problem is that we teach that Marijuana is equivalent to cocaine lsd and heroin – when kids find out how benign it actually is – they instantly decide they have been lied to about the real hard drugs that are a horrible mistake

 

Louis J: Brad, an unfair question. Paul McCartney or anyone else is entitled to whatever they want with their own life. I don’t tell others what to do. It is just not for me. I like reality and consciousness.

Brad Laidman: Louis J perfectly fine I have no problem with that – so are you for or against legalization for those that do want to harmlessly use it – because that is the position that someone who doesn’t tell others what to do should have

Louis J: I did not say that at all. The government should stay out of our lives. Where are you getting these suppositions???

Brad Laidman You just said it was a personal decision and you don’t tell others what to do with their lives – yet you support the government doing so?

Louis J: As to the government…I think they should be reduced nearly totally down to just handling economic issues and military matters and very little else.

Brad Laidman: ok then you should support the legalization of marijuana

Louis J: Brad, once again you are making a supposition. I have never cared much for Paul McCartney as a musician at all. It would take more than marijuana to make his music better.

Brad Laidman: Louis J If you don’t like Paul McCartney’s music we aren’t going to agree on anything ever

Louis J: There are a few musical things that McCartney did that I like and enjoyed but he is not a definitive musician by any means. Rock is a very elementary form of music. Its popularity is in the fact that typical people don’t know much or study music much at all. They just like simple tunes. Fine. McCartney was certainly a pop star. But not at all a musician’s musician.

Louis J: Brad, you are clearly a liberal. Liberals love name calling. Let’s stop now. We are just not compatible sorts. We clearly think differently.

Brad Laidman: Being a Beatles fan makes me a liberal? I didn’t call you a name – I merely pointed out the hypocrisy of your statement – I don’t tell others what to do. It is just not for me – I’m not trying to go to war with you at all

Louis J: You are finally probably correct. If Paul McCartney is a big thing in music for you then our musical backgrounds and experiences are clearly different.

Louis J: I just said it. Government is a big intrusive force in our lives that we do not need a lot of at all.

Brad Laidman: Louis J That’s gonna be a pretty untenable position Paul McCartney wrote the most covered song of all time – he is considered perhaps the finest pop bass player of all time and the Beatles music has by consensus of almost everyone been labeled as genius – you say “Brad, I don’t tell others what to do.” yet you want the government to do that on this issue – OK I’ll gladly stop now

Louis J: Brad, you are talking about ROCK…which, once again, is a very, very elementary music. Paul McCartney is not one of the best bass players of all time at all.

Louis J: But, again, we see things very, very much differently and so our conversation isn’t going to be fruitful at all. Let’s stop and remain civil to one another.

Louis J: Popularity and virtuosity are 2 very, very different things.

Brad Laidman: Louis J yes Rock – and for the last 50 years that’s where the best music has come from because the true artists of the past 50 years loved the medium – what great artist is being ignored because of the public acclaim for McCartney? I have been civil – virtuosity has nothing to do with composing – composing is much harder and much more significant

Louis J: The general public likes simple music. Rock and Country are the big sellers for just that reason. These simple forms of music are well within the musical grasp of the masses. But, again, popularity and virtuosity are not the same at all.

Louis J: The more complex music is the less the general public can understand it and thus like it.

Louis J: Enough. Brad, enjoy the music of your choice and let’s leave it at that.

Brad Laidman: Virtuosity and composing are not the same at all – there are a million better musicians than Kurt Cobain but they can’t write a great song which he could – i will enjoy the music of my choice as should you – I love Jazz and you know what a lot of Jazz artists love the Beatles
