The new cool thing over the last decade is that when any shady character promises to do something that they clearly don’t seem to want to – they say “You have my word” and it’s copacetic all of a sudden – if you are going to kill someone is giving you word really that comforting?
This happened almost every episode of 24
Vincent O’Brien: Chill, man. I don’t know where she is. You’ve got my word.
Jack Bauer: That’s a real comfort, Vincent, knowing I’ve got your word
Yet nearly every episode:
Jack Bauer: I give you my word. (“Day 8: 2:00am-3:00am”)
Jack Bauer: (regarding the safety of Chloe and his family) I’ve taken you at your word, but if you’re lying to me, if anything happens to her or my family, your entire world will come apart and you will never see it coming.
Russian agent: We just want you, Mr. Bauer, that’s all we ever wanted… I would say you’re going to enjoy Moscow, but you’d know I was lying. (“Day 9: 10:00pm-11:00am)
