Ah yes, I’m a reader. I would soon suffer for this once again. By now everyone’s desk had been moved. My desk wasn’t located near any other traders. I was amidst a bunch of secretaries, which was fine with me, but didn’t bode well for my future.
One day, I’m riding in the elevator with Mrs. Marsellus Wallace. Socially she really enjoys me, but she never sees any instance for losing money and has been in a snit for the past few months. I’m carrying a book and she asks me what I’m reading. I show her that it is a biography of Fidel Castro (maybe I am an insurrectionalist!).
She asks me whether I’m enjoying the book or not. My exact words were “It’s sort of weird. I’m reading it to decide whether he was good or evil, but I’m 2/3rds of the way through it and he hasn’t even taken over Cuba yet. I’m waiting to see how many people he put to death when he took over.” That was the end of the conversation, and we both went back to work.
Later that day, I get an email from the new HR director, who I’ve never met, “Can you stop by my office.”
She tells me that Mrs. Wallace really likes me, but was concerned by our conversation. I explain it to the HR woman, who laughs and says that it was a complete misunderstanding. Apparently, Mrs. Wallace took my statement to mean I wanted to kill someone or start a coup!
Naturally, why wouldn’t she, I’m the guy trying to rally the “field” Negroes!
