I don’t really know if hometown columnists are just as bad as hometown fans when it comes to the objective truth, but I wasn’t surprised to see one of the local PD hacks trumpeting Jim Thome as a guy who just hit his 600th home run and did it clean.
Thome is white, well liked, played here, isn’t obnoxious he must not have used steroids!
Then again in the first 80 or so years of the live ball era only three guys hit 600 home runs and they were all sure fire total studs – Ruth, Mays, Aaron
We all give Ken Griffey credit for doing it clean, because he was hurt a lot, skinny, and we’d all have to kill ourselves if we found out he was dirty too.
Every other new name to the 600 list is well tarnished. So you are honestly going to tell me that Jim Thome naturally belongs with those other four deities?
Sorry, I’m just not buying it. If I have to bet my life on whether Jim Thome has been clean his whole career – my heart says yes, but my brain says no way in hell.
PS They put up a statue of Thome outside the stadium it should have been of Omar Vizquel.
