Joe Strummer on Smoking

Finally found a copy of Julian Temple’s doc Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten

There is an amusing if sad section where a friend of Joe’s remembers that he dressed her down about her decision to quit smoking, where he railed against the vicious modern supression of the act and posited that most of the great writers were smokers and that perhaps virulent non-smokers shouldn’t be allowed to enjoy their works.

Not sure if smoking led to Joe’s early mysterious death, but you have to revel at the fact that he used to just show up on occasion and run marathons. I started smoking after a girl broke my heart and I can barely run across the living room.

Maybe his will was just that strong.

Lay offย TZ – I’m trying to quit as we speak. ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. The greatest quote!
“all non smokers should be barred from buying products made by smokers” -joe strummer

I am in full concurrence….the anti smoking thing has gotten out of hand when one can’t go to a show in a dive bar and have a cigarette. If people choose to smoke they should be allowed to smoke. and if people don’t want to be around smoke they can go to the non-smoking joints.
